12 Ways To Clean Air Without Chemicals

Let’s take a look at the best ways to clean the air in the home without using any chemicals!

1. Make Sure Your Windows Are Open

Believe it or not, this is one of the cheapest and most simple ways to maintain the freshness of the air in your home and keep the quality of the air in the home at a high level.

Try to have your windows open, even if it is only for about five minutes or so just so you could alleviate all of the pollutants that can be harmful to you.

If you want to make sure you have a proper air supply, try sleeping with a window cracked open at night.

If it is winter, just try throwing another blanket on top of the one you already use.

Also, don’t forget to open the windows every time you are cleaning a room, the fresh air will accentuate the cleanliness of the room.

There are plenty of houseplants out there that can filter out some negative compounds from the indoor air.

Take the spider plant as an example.

This type of plant has been proven to be effective in reducing benzene, carbon monoxide, hydrogen monoxide, and formaldehyde.

Note that both the leaves and the roots of the plants are utilized in removing the traces of toxic vapor from a tightly sealed building (this has been confirmed by NASA).

The plants alone are sometimes able to remove the low levels of formaldehyde or carbon monoxide from closed spaces.

Tea tree oil is one of the best essential oils in the world, especially because it contains antibacterial properties.

You can add it to homemade cleaning solutions, and if you use small doses, it can even be added to the skin, to treat small cuts.

However, the best property is cleaning the air from bacteria!

Other essential oils such as lavender oil, clove oil, and eucalyptus oil have also been proven to assist in the reduction of dust mites in the home.

This is a bit more on the scientific side, but we will try to break it down as simply as possible.

Other than the oxygen that we breathe and need constantly, we are breathing in some other mini particles and gasses.

Most of them pose a threat to our bodies and should be treated as such.

There are even some studies that have shown these mini particles and gasses may be the cause of cancer or diabetes.

But, on the other hand, some plants can remove these harmful pollutants from the indoor air.

The ions released in the air by certain plants can neutralize some of the harmful airborne particles.

Now, some people have claimed that beeswax can do just the same.

Nevertheless, a bit more research is needed on this subject.

Note that a candle of any kind will send up some soot in the air, so you will still need to open a window.

5. Keep The Shoes Outside

The dirt from your shoes can carry all sorts of things – so try not to let them into your house.

Anything from fungi, pollen, bacteria, pesticides, and feces can be easily brought into the home just by walking in with your shoes on.

Think about it, every single time you enter your home with shoes on, you could be dragging all of those things inside.

So, instead of doing that, take them off at the entrance and try using slippers – they are a comfortable and easy alternative.

This will help you get your floors and your air cleaner too!

The skin cells from your pet can be found everywhere in your home.

This is something that should be given more attention than hairs from your pet.

It can create asthma-like symptoms or enhance your asthma if you are already dealing with it.

If you live with a pet, the only thing that we can recommend is cleaning the pet regularly, especially brushing them outside and cleaning the home with a HEPA filter.

7. Turn Your AC On

If you own an AC, then you have a filtration system for your air already set up in your home!

The best thing about the AC is that it removes all of the air from the house, filters it and cools it down, and then releases it back inside.

Most of the AC out these use a system that has a filter included too, so it can trap all of the particles and bacteria.

This is something that needs to be cleaned or changed regularly.

Just remember that the more you change it, the better results you will have.

Make sure to check what the recommendations are in terms of maintaining the filter in your AC, and stick to that.

If you are constantly using store-bought products to clean your home, then please be aware that they can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and even lungs.

The best solution to this situation is to have them avoided by all means, or to at least clean with them, but open a window while you are cleaning so you can minimize the effects as much as you can.

There is a healthier option to this, you can always use some ingredients such as citrus juice, baking soda, vinegar, and even essential oils.

In addition to that, there are plenty of green products out there that can provide you with cleaning solutions that will not sting and burn while using them.

They can spare you the work of creating your mixture.

Another extremely effective way to remove bacteria from the air is using an air purifier.

This is an especially advised course of action if there is a person that suffers from asthma in the household.

Make sure to check the EPA guide and see what type of air purifier would suit your needs most.

Also, if you feel like the air in the house is dry, there are plenty of air humidifiers that can clean the air in a room.

Mold can release spores in the air that can hurt people who are dealing with allergies.

It can be found in dark and damp places such as the basement, the laundry room, and the bathroom.

11. Air Out Your New Furniture

Some of the chemicals can be found in fabrics, paint, glues, construction materials, and so much more.

When you buy a new piece of furniture, these chemicals are bound to be released into the air.

If you want to reduce the spread of these chemicals, then make sure to air out your new pieces of furniture for at least a week in a garage.

At least keep the windows open in the room they are going to be in for the next couple of months to ensure the proper ventilation.

Try using cooking oil that has a higher smoke point instead of cooking with regular oil and creating a smell of burnt oil that will last for hours after you have finished cooking.

The extra virgin olive oil has a lower smoke point in comparison to the sunflower, avocado, corn, peanut, canola, and safflower oil.
